before israel's elections. the country's leaders say the race won't keep them from attempting to stop the rocket attacks. at the live desk, angie goff, news 4. this morning we're learning more about the investigation that revealed that now former cia director david petraeus was having an affair. petraeus' mistress, author paula broadwell, was sending liaison at an air force unpaid base in tampa. that woman is reported as jill kelley. she reportedly went to the fbi when she received the threatening message, and that is whatriggered the bureau's investigation. >> mrs. broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her, and she was frightened, and she went to the fbi. oh, i can't believe it, but that's what it is. >> one of petraeus' former associates says petraeus and his wife were longtime friends of

kelley and her husband. he says petraeus and kelley did not have an affair. >> petraeus won't testify before congress this week about the attack on the u.s. consulate benghazi libya. acting cia director will take his place. senator dianne feinstein, who's the chair of the committee, may call on him later to testify. she says his resignation has nothing to do with the attack on benghazi. the president will meet with members of the business community before sitting down with congressional leaders on friday. the president wants to build a consensus for his approach to avoiding the financial catastrophe. senior democrats and republicans are confident they can reach on a spending plan before the end of the year before billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts will take effect,

possibly sending us into a deep recession. economists warn we may feel the effects of the budget standoff long before new year's eve. >> if in a few weeks they've failed to reach an agreement, you're going to see anxiety growing in the u.s. board rooms. it's going to be a rough couple of months for the u.s. economy. >> president obama says he's willing to compromise to reach an agreement, but he insists america's top earners pay more in taxes. it's approximately two weeks since hurricane sandy hit shore in the northeast. crews are still working to restore power to 120,000 homes in new jersey. 4,000 residents are still living in shelters. fema has approved more than $450 million in assistance. in the meantime, governor andrew cuomo plans to ask the government for $30 billion in disaster aid. the federal red cross says it has received $117 million in donations to help the victims of sandy.

the agency also says its response has been near flawless. some residents in certain areas disagree with that. they say the help has been sporadic and very difficult to find. >> red cross hasn't offered any assistance until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think we are near flawless in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy poses unique challenges. it's the first cold weather hurricane, and it struck in an extremely urban area. the agency maintains it has more than 5,700 volunteers in the region who have already handed out nearly 5 million meals and snacks to people in need. the new york veterans day parade not only honored those who fought for our country but collected donations for hurricane sandy victims. the group collect winter coats for people who were affected by

welcome back. at 4:45 this morning, we're getting a better look caused by the deadly explosion in indiana.

it killed two people and injured seven others late saturday night in indianapolis. investigators believe the explosion happened inside this home near that burned out car. the blast obliterated the house itself and the home next door. investigators are trying to determine what sparked that explosion. >> there are many explosions, accidents, and different things, but i have not seen anything with this type of destruction that happened so quickly. >> they suspect that some sort of gas leak caused the explosion. firefighters evacuated more than 200 people from the neighborhood. the explosion damaged or destroyed about three dozen homes. 14 before the hour. this morning a college student is under arrest for scaring people inside a movie theater not far from where the colorado movie theater shootings happened. "the denver post" says the 17-year-old walked into a theater in boulder, colorado, last night wearing a clown hat and a mask of the joker from the batman movies. in july more than 20 people were

killed and 50 injured during a filming of "the dark knight rises" in aurora, colorado. the teen was unarmed and didn't hurt anyone, but several people ran out after seeing him and alerted security. one person dead and an officer injured. a 64-year-old man walked into police headquarters and tried to shoot an officer behind protective glass. the officers ordered him to drop the gun, eventually shooting and killing him. the injured officer is expected to make a recovery. a small earthquake is causing problems in the small eastern country of myanmar. saturday morning, a 6.8 magnitude quake rocked the country. it caused plenty of physical damage, collapsing buildings and bridges, and even damaging ancient buddhist pagodas. as many as 12 people are feared dead. some of those may have happened when the quake caused a mine to collapse. venice, italy, is used to

water but not this much. heavy rains have put 70% of the city under water, some by as much as five feet. flooding is common this time of year in the northern city. this year is worse than most. this is the fifth highest level of floodwater in 140 years. the city is working on movable barriers that would protect it from high tides and floodwaters, but they won't be operational for an additional two years. this morning police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a 20-year-old man. they found him suffering from a gunshot wound in the 7300 block of 23rd avenue in lewisdale saturday morning. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police are trying to identify a suspect and a motive in this case. and police in howard county are also trying to figure out who shot a fast food restaurant manager. the manager of taco bell on minnesout minstrel way in columbia was

shot. the man's name has not been released. the csx train derailed just north of richmond after 9:00 last night. amtrak had to stop train 66 at richmond's main street station and transfer passengers to buses. passengers arrived at union station by bus after 10:00 p.m. today the head of montgomery county public schools will share his vision for the future of the county school system. school superintendent joshua starr will deliver his first state of the schools address. he's calling it building the future together. starr has had a little more than a year to assess the school system. he's now in the middle of his second school year on the job. nearly 300 janitors at walter reed national military center in bethesda say they haven't been paid in two weeks. the union that represents the janitors says it's filed a complaint against federal contractor fscat enterprises. the union claims it hasn't been

paid by the government. the union also says the janitors have been reluctant to strike because of the patients at the hospital. a curious cat in bowie, maryland, came close to losing one of her nine lives after spending days on top of a utility pole. the cat is named fierce, apparently, disappeared on wednesday. yesterday a little boy spotted her on top of this bge utility pole just off of bel air drive. that's when the cat's owner linda drew called firefighters, who said she needed to contact the power company to be safe. crews showed up late last night with a cherry picker right there. the trouble is the scared cat, if you will -- that scared the cat, and she took off down the pole and into the bushes. drew says she's relieved the cat is down. >> i'm just glad she's down from there. i was pretty sick about her being missing. >> drew says she believes that fierce will return home sometime today.

welcome back at 4:57. the price is gas is expected to drop through the thanksgiving holiday. the lundberg survey found the average price for a gallon of gas already dropped nearly 21 cents in two weeks and could drop another 10 to 20 cents. the average price of regular gas is $3.57 in the district. in maryland it's $3.45. in west virginia, it's $3.57. the national average is $3.44. the money you're saving on gas could go to your thanksgiving meal. those hosting thanksgiving dipper plan to spend $246 this year. about 240 of those surveyed say they won't host this year because of the price. nearly 44% say they felt pressured into hosting because family or friends didn't want to pay for it. the site recommends you buy generic brands and keep decorations simple. the turkey in the middle of the table is the only centerpiece you need. >> our family, we do pot luck. everyone cooks something. who has the time and the money
